ESP Community Newsletter
31/03/2010
ESP has been flat out these past few weeks and we have heaps of events planned so read on and stay tuned.
IWDA
Two weeks ago É. From the International WomenÕs Development Agency came to speak at the ESP meeting. She gave an interesting talk on the organisationÕs current projects and how she became involved in the industry. She also gave helpful tips on working in the development industry, such as becoming involved in volunteer work. For more info on the IWDA visit www.iwda.org.au
Forests Forever Ecology Camp
Over the Easter break some members of the ESP community attended the Forests Forever Ecology camp held near Orbost. This is an annual event held by Environment East Gippsland. It was incredibly informative, showcasing the old growth forests of the area and the devastating impact logging is having on the land and wildlife. The group EEG has recently taken VicForests (the logging company) to court over its failure to protect endangered animals from logging at Brown Mountain and are awaiting a verdict that could set a strong precedent for logging operations and endangered species protection in Victoria.
La Trobe Community Garden
The community garden has had a massive facelift and is looking wonderful (thanks to the hard work of volunteers at two working bees recently)! Tomorrow (Wednesday 21st) in the Agora there will be a stall with soup, scones and more, made from the produce of the garden, will be sold as a fundraiser for the garden. Come along around lunchtime to help out, grab a bite to eat, or just say hi.
Refugees Are Welcome
This Wednesday 21st April, Socialist Alternative and Labor Left have organised a speak out called ÔRefugees Are WelcomeÕ. ESP is supporting this event as the issue of refugees is so strongly linked to issues of equality and peace. It is being held at 1pm in the Agora.
La Trobe Environment Week
The La Trobe Environment Week in week 10 (10th -14th of May) Coincides with the official FairTrade fortnight and so ESP is now combining the two into an Environment and Social Justice Week. We will have FairTrade events, a talk by Melbourne Barrister and Greens candidate Brian Walters, a Non-violent activism workshop, solar powered beer and more. Come help (4pm in SS423 Thursdays) if you have ideas or want to get involved and stay tuned for more.
